New Orleans Police Department (Louisiana)

Summary:

In May 2010, the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice (the Division) opened an investigation of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). The Division had previously opened an investigation into NOPD in June 1995, which closed in March 2004. In March 2011, the Division identified a pattern or practice of excessive force; unlawful stops, searches and arrests; discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, and LGBT status; and gender discrimination in the failure to adequately respond to and investigate violence against women. In January 2013, the parties entered into a court-enforced consent decree, which remains in effect.
