Summary:

In March 1998, the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice (the Division) opened an investigation into the Columbus Police Department in Ohio. In October 1999, the Division filed suit against the City of Columbus, alleging a pattern or practice of excessive force; and unlawful stops, searches and arrests linked to inadequate policies and training; inadequate supervision of officers; and failures to investigate misconduct and hold officers accountable. The Division and the City of Columbus resolved the litigation by agreement in 2002, which terminated in May 2004.
