Alamance County Sheriff’s Office (North Carolina)

Summary:

In June 2010, the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice (the Division) opened an investigation into the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina. In September 2012, the Division identified a pattern or practice of unlawful discrimination against Latinos and unlawful stops and arrests in violation of the Fourth Amendment. In December 2012, the Division determined that it was unable to resolve its claims cooperatively and filed a complaint under Section 14141. In August 2015, a federal district court dismissed the United States’ claims after trial. The United States appealed this judgment, and in August 2016, while the appeal was pending, the United States and Alamance County entered into a memorandum of agreement, which remains in effect.
